Visual Inspection

  • Examine the overall door condition including the door frame, leaf and seals for any damage such as warping, cracks, or dents that could compromise its effectiveness in a fire.
  • Ensuring appropriate fire door signs are installed, such as “Fire Door – Keep Shut” on non-exit doors or “Fire Exit – Keep Clear” on designated exit doors.
  • Inspect any glass panels within the fire door to confirm they are fire-rated and intact. 

Functionality Test

  • Confirm that latches, locks, and other ironmongery components are operational and allow the door to close securely without sticking.
  • Testing the door’s functionality to ensure it closes and latches correctly.
  • Verifying that the door opens freely and that any automatic closing devices are operational.
  • Ensure that the self-closing device is functioning correctly, so the door closes completely and securely.

Compliance Verification

  • Ensuring that all components meet the current fire safety standards and regulations.
  • Checking for appropriate certification labels and fire resistance ratings.
  • The certification label should provide information such as the fire rating (e.g., FD30, FD60, etc.), indicating how long the door can withstand fire.
  • The inspection will ensure compliance with fire safety regulations.

Hardware Inspection

  • Examining hinges, locks, handles, and other hardware for proper operation and condition, ensuring they are firmly attached with the correct number of screws are appropriately fire-rated.
  • Verifying that intumescent strips and smoke seals are correctly installed and functional.

Fire doors should not have any deadbolts or locks that prevent opening without a key from the inside.

After completing the fire door an inspection, the inspector typically provides a detailed report, which includes the findings and any recommended repairs or replacements.
